Perfect Escape
Author: Jennifer Brown
Published: July 10th, 2012
Publisher: Little Brown
Goodreads Summary: "Kendra has always felt overshadowed by her older brother, Grayson, whose OCD forces him to live a life of carefully coordinated routines. The only way Kendra can stand out next to Grayson is to be perfect, and she has perfection down to an art -- until a cheating scandal threatens her flawless reputation.
Behind the wheel of her car, with Grayson asleep beside her, Kendra decides to drive away from it all -- with enough distance, maybe she'll be able to figure everything out. But eventually, Kendra must stop running and come to terms with herself, her brother, and her past.
With undeniable grace and humor, acclaimed author Jennifer Brown explores OCD, the pressure for perfection, and the emotional highs and lows of a complex sibling relationship."
Concept/Ideas: 4/5
Storyline/Plot: 3/5
Characters: 4/5
Writing Style: 4/5
So I'm kind of confused on whether I should give this book a 3.5 or a 4. It's hard. On one hand, I loved the concept and ideas for the book, Jennifer Brown's writing in general, and the characters. On the other hand, I find the plotline to be a little slow, and not terribly progressive.
I've loved every one of Jennifer Brown's books, and this one still, did not disappoint. I obviously had a few issues with it, but overall, it was a good read. What I like most about her writing is that she always includes some type of serious teen issue (Bitter End: Abuse, Hate List: School shooting, Perfect Escape: OCD). That definitely allows readers to connect with the novels.
I liked the concept for this book a lot. I'm personally not a huge fan of "road trip" novels though, because I find them boring. I'm not sure why, but I do.
Personally I kind of found Kendra to be selfish, especially in the beginning of the novel. Near the end, that disappears a bit more, but overall, she was not a likable character.
The plotline just lacked something though. I'm not sure what, but it did. I found it to be boring at parts, and some sections just dragged on. Although, in my opinion, the whole way she wrote the story with OCD, I think that this road trip format was in fact the best way to go about the book. I think the idea was executed best that way.
Overall, a good read. I reccommend it, although it was slow in some parts. Of course though, anything that Jennifer Brown writes is a worthwhile read.
